How to Choose Your First Crystal

How to Choose Your First Crystal

I love crystals. I love holding a stone that came from the other side of the world and thinking how long it took to become what it is. If you are just getting started, picking your first one can feel like a lot. Here is how I'd do it.

Go with what catches your eye. Seriously, that's the best rule. If a stone makes you stop scrolling, that's your stone. Color, pattern, how it looks in the light, it all counts.

A few easy ones to start with:

  • Clear quartz: sparkly, easy to love and a good price.
  • Amethyst: that deep purple is hard to beat.
  • Rose Quartz: soft pink and gentle.
  • Citrine: warm and golden, like a little bit of sunshine
  • Black tourmaline: a classic for feeling grounded.

Think about how you'll use it. Some people keep a small stone in their picket, others put a big cluster on a shelf, and plenty of people just buy one because it is beautiful. All of that is fine.

Take care of it. Wire it with a soft cloth. Keep water away from the softer stones like selenite and keep amethyst and rose quartz out of direct sun so the color doesn't fade.

People have loved crystals for thousands of years, and I think it's easy to see why. They're a nice reminder to slow down and enjoy something beautiful. I have loved rocks since I was a little kid, my great grandfather was a rock hound. I remember being very little and him tumbling rocks in the garage.
