Phantom quartz is a variety of quartz consisting of visible layers of overlapping crystal growths. The Hematite is growing over the quartz and then the quartz grows another layer overlapping the crystal, making a boundary between the growths visible. You can see the outline of the hematite growth within. The interior crystal layers are known as phantoms.
